Introducing Ori Yoga
The Emergent Style and Guiding Ethos of the Black Boys OM School of Yoga We are honored to introduce Ori Yoga, the name for the style and ethos that has naturally emerged from the energy, service, and history of Black Boys OM. Ori Yoga is not a new curriculum or a replacement for any training our graduates have completed. Instead, it is the name that captures what has been present within Black Boys OM from the beginning, our way of approaching practice, healing, teaching, and community care. It describes the unique expression of yoga that has grown organically through our work in wellness, our cultural grounding, and our commitment to all Black communities. Rooted in the Krama lineage of Yoga and informed by the non-dual philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism, Ori Yoga reflects our school’s long-standing focus on meditation, embodiment, Black healing, and spiritual devotion. The name draws from Ori in Yoruba cosmology, one’s inner divinity and highest self, affirming that every practitioner carries a sacred intelligence within. Ori Yoga centers four core principles: Meditative – Steady awareness and consistent meditation as foundations for growth. Black AF – Culturally grounded practice shaped by the lived experiences of Black persons. Embodied – Mind-Body-Spirit integration as the pathway to freedom in lived experience. Oriented Toward the Divine – Honoring devotion, sacredness, and inner divinity through practice. These principles have always been present in our work. Ori Yoga simply gives them a clear name. This ethos will continue to inform how we teach, certify, serve, and support our communities through the Black Boys OM School of Yoga. It is the expression of our lineage, our history, and our collective commitment to healing and liberation. Ori Yoga is the style of yoga that has risen from who we are, how we serve, and the wholeness we remember together. To read more about how this ethos unfolded we recommend reading this substack article from Black Boys OM creator, Danny Angelo Fluker Jr.
