Brandon Copeland
โYoga and meditation have helped me see a pathway out of the destructive system set up for me that only leads to death, jail, or denial of my purpose and/or community. When I practice yoga and meditation, Iโm able to clear my mind of all of the distractions readily provided by our society. Yoga evaporates the need to validate my feelings with aggression, self-harm, anger or feigned apathy. When I practice, Iโm able to value myself for simply being and existing. This value is not based on any influence outside of the moment that Iโm in. This value honors sadness, anger, and sorrow as a vital part of my existence on par with happiness, joy, and success. These feelings are what make us human. These feelings give me room to be free, honest and effective in navigating life to find and carry out my God-given, self-driven purpose. Yoga and meditation remind me that I am a multifaceted person capable of feeling an array of things. Iโm able to see my place in society and make smart decisions to better the life of my family and community. Representation of Black men practicing wellness is important because Black men need self-led anxiety reduction and wellness practices the most. โ- Brandon Copeland, creator of Trap Yoga and Khepera Wellness
About us
Black Boys OM provides spaces for Black Boys and Men to experience mind-body healing modalities in spaces held by trained Black Male practitioners with the aim of transforming individuals, families, and communities.
ย
Created by Danny Angelo Fluker, Jr., Black Boys OM was initially developed with the support of Khepera Wellness (Washington D.C.) , the Collective STL (St. Louis) , Yellow Mat Yoga (Atlanta, Georgia), and Southwest Atlanta Yoga Energy Center (Atlanta Georgia).
ย
Black Boys OM, established in 2018 as a grassroots community organization and obtaining 501(c)(3) status in 2020, has emerged as a driving force for positive change. Providing access to over 2,300 mind-body health sessions for Black Boys and Men, the organization has cultivated a network of over 400 skilled Black Male Wellness practitioners. These practitioners hold spaces and lead efforts in line with Black Boys OM's mission of Healing and Wellness education. Through these initiatives, the organization actively nurtures well-being and empowerment within the Black community.
"I created Black Boys OM because the problem of limited access to mind-body health resources for Black boys and men is widespread and severe, this due to a combination of systemic barriers, such as limited representation of Black Male Wellness practitioners in the field, racial disparities in access to healthcare and wellness resources, and the lack of culturally responsive programs and spaces. These forces contribute to the marginalization and limited opportunities for Black boys and men to engage in mind-body healing practices. The specific problem being addressed is the underrepresentation and limited accessibility of mind-body health modalities for Black boys and men. This lack of representation and access perpetuates disparities in mental health and well-being, while also reinforcing societal narratives that neglect the specific needs and experiences of Black individuals in the realm of holistic healing. We have been fortunate in a short amount of time to grow a network of 400 certified Black Male Wellness practitioners to hold spaces for Black Boys and Men to experience mind-body health, experience, education and practice. "-Danny Angelo Fluker Jr.
